Spring Gardening Tips
Spring is sprung.
The grass is riz.
I wonder where the birdies iz!
This is the time of year we've all been waiting for. If you're a first time gardener here are some fundamental tips passed along by our seasoned green-thumb club.
One of the best ways to revitalize a garden is to give it a two to three inch blanket of organic matter. Use compost or even dry grass or leaves! Dig this into the dirt when you first turn it over to loosen it up and start your new garden.
Water you lawn and garden in the morning, when the birds are singing! The warmth of the sun will dry the garden naturally and you'll have less disease than when your garden sits damp all through the night.
When cutting the grass let some grass cuttings remain on top of the lawn to help enrich the soil as they sift down. Save your cuttings for the flower beds and vegetable garden.
Got an old pair of golf shoes around? Put them on and walk all over your lawn to aerate it some... especially in the spring!
Try to avoid chemical weed-killers! When improperly applied they can burn your lawn. They're also very unfriendly for the environment. Killing the small bugs that bug you is killing the birds' food. Let nature be natural! Weedkillers and pesticides can be deadly for pets who play on or walk near the lawn.
Throughout the growing season cover your soil with a few inches of mulch. This will help keep the weeds out and the water in. There are different varieties of mulch to choose from but if you have pets who cruise outdoors, cedar mulch is excellent for combatting fleas!
Most of all, enjoy your new hobby! Take time to smell the roses!
