You're Invited!
If you wish to invite beautiful butterflies and harmonious hummingbirds to your outdoor living space, now is the time to start! If you've ever wondered why these lovely creatures frequent some gardens yet they don't often pay yours a visit, it has to do with the types of flowers you plant!
A garden made exclusively to attract butterflies and hummingbirds would have these perennials: Phlox, Penstemon, Monarda, Buddleia, and Sedum, all in pinks and purples. Add some Shasta Daisies and yellow Coreopsis to complete the magic recipe. It's best to buy established plants and, depending on your growing region, they should be planted between March 15th and June 15th.
Read the labels to know the height that each type of plant is capable of growing to. Then before you dig the holes, set the plants in the area designated for this special garden, placing the taller plants in the back, medium-height plants in the center, and shorter plants at the front. This could be called garden spacing; the advantage of this is that you can be sure that no plants will upstage each other, vying for sunshine. Everyone will receive the full benefit of the sun and have the chance to put on a show of color!
Consider a trellis which offers pretty privacy when covered with climbing flowers. Butterflies and hummingbirds will do more than flutter by. They'll feel welcome to your garden party and maybe even stay awhile!
