Rooms and Rugs

Area rugs can complete a room - it takes the various colors and items that are placed throughout the room and pulls everything together. Area rugs can make a larger room cozy and adds warmth and comfort.

There are a few main considerations when placing or purchasing your area rugs and the most important item aside from the rug design is the size and placement.

For Living Rooms and Family Rooms

Home Design Essentials - Rooms and RugsIdeally you want an area rug to be proportionate to a rooms size however if this can't be accomplished there are tricks that can be applied. There should be an equal amount of space remaining between the rugs and all the walls. For great rooms, use a virtual wall measurement on some sides of the room - this will help create the space measurements from which you can design your living room or family room space.

The furniture in the center of the sitting area where the rug is placed should be touching it - the furniture does not have to be sitting completely on the rug. To fill out the room where the carpet is not laid perhaps you can place a table behind the sofa and side tables in certain areas.

For Dining Rooms

It is suggested that the rug be large enough so that all the dining room chairs sit on the rug when people are sitting down in the chairs.

For Bedrooms

It is recommended that an area rug covers all of the floor up to 2-3 feet from the bedroom walls. If you do not have a rug to accomplish this you may choose to have a few smaller rugs placed in the bedroom. One on each side of the bed or perhaps one placed at the end of the bed.

Area rugs can be extremely expensive so one economical way of coming up with an area rug is to take the end of the roll carpet swatches that meet your design criteria and have them stitched up to resemble an area rug.
