Jewels From Junk - City Living Room Table
Passing an open field one day, on our way to play golf, we became aware of an auction-taking place. Upon returning a few hours later, an abandoned treadle sewing machine base caught our eye. Somebody had unscrewed the sewing mechanism and table and just left the base. I had always wanted one!!
The base weighs at least 50 pounds and is made of cast iron. It is comprised of two sides designed in an intricate pattern, a large wheel, minus the belt that turned to cause the needle to go up and down, and a delicately designed foot pedal.
Now, black did not exactly suit the decor of our living room so I painted it a flat white. This color also highlighted the beautiful pattern in the iron. We happened to have an elliptical shaped piece of glass, from an old dressing table, that turned out to be the perfect size. Voila! A masterpiece! Also a very interesting conversation piece!
A vivid flowering plant sits on the pedal and the surface is adorned with collectible glass pieces of different shades of azure and purple and these are illuminated at night by strategically placed candles. This is very attractive in front of a full-length window, as during the day it does not obliterate our view.
