Canopy Beds
You can create a romantic ambiance in your bedroom with a beautiful canopy bed! From an elaborate draped treatment to simply a sway of fabric, you can turn the mundane into the magical.
Canopies actually came about from an expressed need to keep things from "dropping in"! In early days, a bed with big posts and a sheet draped over them gave protection from insects or even from bird and rat droppings. Roofing was not what it is now!
Today a canopy is an accessory which adds style and grace to your bedroom. Even if your bed doesn't have a canopy frame there are ways to create the look of a canopy. You can, for example, install curtain rods to the ceiling at each end of the bed and using tab-top or tie-top panels, attach the drapes and let them cascade softly to the floor. Or, try attaching a wooden or metal ring to the ceiling at the centre of the head of your bed and drape long fabric panels through the ring, spreading out the panels to show off their beauty as they reach the floor.
Chinz, silk, velvet, and tapestry are the traditional fabrics considered in creating a canopy but if you have a special theme going on, such as a country look in your little girl's room, try gingham or a nice calico print. A canopy makes a dramatic statement in any bedroom.
Whether you desire the stunning effect of a full bed canopy with drapes and reading lamps or just the simple effect of a crown canopy which lends a sweep of color, you can make your bed unforgettable! After all, it should be a place you look forward to going to!
Creative Headboard Ideas
A headboard is often one of the last things we put into place in our home. Yet it gives a finished touch to your room and a feeling of solid comfort where you lay your head at night.
You can transform a flea market headboard with just a little sandpaper, paint, and your imagination. Make a personal style statement and have fun trying out your restoration skills!
First off, sand the headboard so that the paint sticks better. Then roll on the paint and allow it to dry. If this is part of an entire bedroom makeover try the pre-mixed paints and tie the headboard into the chosen color scheme of your bedroom. Personalize your bed by finding a transfer script, say a Shakespearean quote, or something whimsical, like "Dare to Dream" and attach it with the help of painter's tape, higher than your pillows would reach. In less than a day you have spruced up your headboard! Now you're ready for a good night's sleep.
Two or three old doors attached to the wall behind your bed can give your bed a tall, dramatic look. Paint over the doors in a co-ordinating hue to your walls and bedding. Then, using over-the-door hooks, add photos which conjure up beautiful memories to send you off to slumberland smiling.
If you have sewing savvy, your old headboard can be covered with a slipcover!
If you need more storage space try placing a bookcase behind your bed. Use clip-lights for night-time reading. Place baskets in the bookshelves for storage.
Whether you find something in your own backyard, at a garage sale, or simply reuse what you have in place, the ideas are endless. Rest assured.
Sweet Dreams!
