Armoires
An armoire is a beautiful antique piece which can certainly be very functional as well! Is your closet crammed full? Would you like to hide the T.V. or A/V equipment or computer? Try some mini-restyling of, or simply refinishing, an antique armoire and let it grace your home.
Before 1890 an armoire was a locked parlor piece for your personal possessions. You would hang a few of your very good articles of clothing on pegs inside. Armoires were quite narrow until the invention of hangers. You will notice how their design changed with the times.
Think of an armoire as a portable closet! You can stay with the traditional use of the armoire for jewelry or clothing or use it creatively as a kitchen pantry or a bathroom piece for towels and linens. If you’re up to converting the hinge doors into pocket doors an armoire makes a lovely entertainment unit or computer work area. It’s easy to install a pull-out shelf for the computer; try a swivel shelf for the T.V.!
It’s fun to hunt around at flea markets and antique auctions to find the armoire to fit your plans. It makes sense to use the space wisely in your home and at the same time add a touch of elegance from the past.
